Ambo and the Great Tree

A platformer made from its soundtrack. Everything here may be used in articles and videos about the game.

Short description

A chubby pangolin rolls, climbs and licks his way through a tree the size of a continent to win back the amber a colony of termites has stolen, while the soundtrack reacts to every move.

Long description

Ambo and the Great Tree is a side-scrolling platformer in the spirit of the 1990s classics, with 3D characters on a 2D path. It was designed from the music outwards. Each world started as a sound palette and only then became a place.

The soundtrack is built in layers that the game turns on and off. When Ambo curls into a ball his scales sound like a shaker and a percussion layer joins the song. Mushrooms play notes when he lands on them, the jungle moves on the beat, and when he takes a hit his friend Mica sings his motif from a perch until he picks her up.

The Termite Queen has emptied the Hollow of the Roots and plans to turn the tree into the biggest termite mound in the world. Ambo is a pangolin, and pangolins eat termites. With Mica on his back he follows the trail of amber from the roots to the crown.

Features

How it is made

Xavier Mas Leszkiewicz is a music producer. He composes the soundtrack and designs the game around it. The concept art and the first 3D models of the characters started from image and 3D generation tools (Gemini and Meshy). They were then rigged and animated in Blender and put into the game in Unity. They are a starting point for the art, not the final version.
